Port of Galveston Cruise Port Guide

The Port of Galveston is Texas's year-round cruise port, sailing Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Norwegian ships from terminals along Harborside Drive. It's a major drive-in market — most passengers arrive by car from Houston or elsewhere in Texas rather than flying in directly, though both Houston airports work for fly-in travelers. Because a single causeway bridge is the only way onto the island, planning your parking and arrival timing matters more here than at ports with multiple access roads.

Galveston is Texas's year-round cruise port, and most passengers arrive by car from Houston or elsewhere in Texas rather than flying in the same morning. Carnival, Disney, Royal Caribbean, MSC, and Norwegian all sail from terminals along Harborside Drive, and the island is reachable by a single causeway bridge, which makes arrival timing matter more here than at ports with multiple routes in.

This hub is a practical starting point, not a booking engine. Use it to size up the choices in a few minutes, then follow the deeper guides for parking and hotels. Everything here is written to help you decide; we call out where details change often and should be confirmed directly with the provider before you book.

How to think about it

  • Driving in? Parking is your main decision — compare the port's own lots against independent off-site lots and hotel park-and-cruise packages, and leave extra time for causeway traffic on a Saturday morning.
  • Flying in? Houston Hobby (HOU), about 42 miles away, is closer than George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) at roughly 70 miles. Either way, don't book a same-day flight.
  • Arriving the night before? A hotel near the terminals or on the island removes the causeway variable from your morning — just confirm which terminal your ship uses (25, 28, 10, or 16) first.

Nearby airports

Airports near Port of Galveston
AirportDistance to portNotes
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)~42 miAbout 45-60 minutes via I-45 South in normal traffic; the closer of Houston's two airports to the port.
George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)~70 miAbout 1.5-2 hours via I-45 South depending on Houston traffic; build in extra time if flying into IAH.

Common timing mistakes

  • Underestimating causeway traffic — the single bridge onto Galveston Island can back up badly on embarkation Saturdays, especially arriving from Houston the morning of the cruise.
  • Not pre-booking a parking spot — port and off-site lots fill on popular sailing dates, and walk-up rates typically cost more than online reservations.
  • Confusing which terminal your ship uses (25, 28, 10, or 16) — the wrong address can cost real time on a morning that's already tight.
  • Assuming a hotel's 'free' parking covers the full cruise — some hotel lots only cover a standard overnight stay, not a full week; confirm before booking.
  • Skipping a day bag — checked luggage can take hours to reach your cabin, so keep documents, medication, and essentials with you at boarding.
