PortMiami Cruise Port Guide

PortMiami sits on Dodge Island, just across Biscayne Bay from Downtown Miami, and brands itself the "Cruise Capital of the World" with terminals serving nearly every major cruise line. With ten passenger terminals spread across the north and south sides of the island, knowing which terminal you're sailing from matters more here than at most ports — it determines your closest garage, hotel, and drop-off point.

PortMiami calls itself the "Cruise Capital of the World" — ten passenger terminals spread across Dodge Island, just across Biscayne Bay from Downtown Miami. Here, knowing your terminal matters as much as deciding whether to drive or fly in; get either wrong and it can mean a long walk with luggage.

This hub is a practical starting point, not a booking engine. Use it to size up your options, then follow the parking and hotels guides below. Terminal and shuttle details change often — confirm them with the provider before you book.

How to think about it

  • Know your terminal first. PortMiami's ten terminals are labeled AA through V, across the island's north and south sides — Carnival is typically at D, E, and F, Royal Caribbean at A, and MSC at the newer Terminal AA. Your terminal decides which garage, hotel, and drop-off point makes sense.
  • Driving in? Compare the port's own terminal garages against off-site park & cruise lots and a hotel park-and-cruise package before you commit.
  • Flying in? Miami International (MIA) is the closer airport, about 7 miles out. Fort Lauderdale (FLL), about 26 miles away, can mean a cheaper flight but a longer transfer.
  • Arriving the night before? Downtown Miami and Brickell sit closest to the terminals; fly-in travelers often prefer an MIA-area hotel with a Park & Cruise package instead.

Miami International Airport (MIA)~7 miThe closest major airport to PortMiami. Some hotels and off-site parking operators run shuttles, and taxis/rideshare are widely available — confirm your specific cruise line's shuttle offering too.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)~26 miFarther out than MIA, but often chosen for cheaper flights. Budget extra time and consider a shared shuttle, rideshare, or a pre-cruise hotel night to buffer against traffic.

Common timing mistakes

  • Assuming any port garage works for any terminal — PortMiami spans several garages across the north and south sides of Dodge Island, so parking at the wrong one can mean a long walk (or a shuttle ride) with luggage.
  • Flying in the same day you sail — Miami traffic, afternoon thunderstorms, and flight delays can eat the buffer you need; arriving the day before is safer, especially around the port's busiest midday check-in window.
  • Packing prohibited items in a carry-on — alcohol, sharp objects, and certain appliances picked up at the airport or on the way are commonly confiscated at PortMiami's security screening.
  • Not checking your specific terminal before booking a hotel or parking — cruise lines are grouped by terminal (Carnival at D/E/F, Royal Caribbean at A, MSC at AA, and so on), so the most convenient hotel or garage depends on which terminal you're sailing from.
  • Underestimating MacArthur Causeway and Port of Miami Tunnel traffic during rush hour — a normally quick ride from downtown can take much longer on a weekday morning or evening.
